Schmetterlinge

Die Forschungsarbeiten der Sektion sind sammlungsbezogen und umfassen die Bereiche Taxonomie, Systematik, Zoogeographie und Phylogenie. Neben dem Kurator selbst nutzen Wissenschaftler aus der ganzen Welt die vorhandenen Bestände für eigene Forschungen. Sie entleihen entweder Material oder arbeiten während kürzerer oder längerer Forschungsaufenthalte direkt an der Sammlung.

In der Sektion Lepidoptera wird außer der großen Schmetterlingssammlung auch Material der nahe verwandten Ordnung Trichoptera (Köcherfliegen) kuratorisch betreut. Letztere sind zahlenmäßig eher gering vertreten, enthalten aber auch wertvolles Typenmaterial.

Die Lepidopteren-Sammlung umfasst zur Zeit mehr als 3 Millionen Exemplare und ist damit eine der größten Forschungssammlungen dieser Insektenordnung in Deutschland.

Besonders erwähnenswert ist der große Anteil chinesischer Schmetterlinge (ca. 600.000 Exemplare).

BGE - Biodiversity Genomics Europe

Das Projekt Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE)(link is external) hat das übergeordnete Ziel, die Nutzung der Genomik zu beschleunigen, um das Verständnis der biologischen Vielfalt zu verbessern, Veränderungen in der biologischen Vielfalt zu überwachen und Maßnahmen zur Bekämpfung ihres Rückgangs zu ergreifen.Trotz der bahnbrechenden Entwicklungen sowohl bei der DNA-Barcodierung als auch bei der vollständigen Genomsequenzierung besteht nach wie vor die dringende Notwendigkeit, funktionierende Praxisgemeinschaften auf verschiedenen Ebenen zu entwickeln und zu stärken, um Kapazitäten aufzubauen,

Evolutionary relationships and biogeography of the enigmatic West Indian butterfly genus Calisto, a high-throughput sequencing approach

The West Indies is an archipelago located on the Atlantic Ocean, close to central portion of the Americas. The West Indies consist of the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the Bahaman Islands in the north. Due to its geological complexity, the region has been considered a natural laboratory for studying species formation, adaptive radiation, and niche space occupation. While many plants groups are highly diverse, most faunal groups inhabiting the nearby continent are depauperated or completely absent from the islands including good dispersers like insects, birds, and bats.

Die Initiative Europäischer ReferenzGenom Atlas (ERGA) ist eine gesamteuropäische wissenschaftliche Antwort auf die aktuelle Bedrohung der biologischen Vielfalt. Referenzgenome bieten den umfassendsten Einblick in die genetische Grundlage jeder Art und stellen eine wichtige Ressource für das Verständnis der Funktionsweise der biologischen Vielfalt dar. ERGA zielt darauf ab, die Genome aller europäischen Arten zu sequenzieren und wird zu diesem Zweck einen interdisziplinären Arbeitsablauf einrichten.

Molecular phylogeny, biogeography and color pattern evolution of the burnet moth subfamily Chalcosiinae (Lepidoptera, Zygaenoidea, Zygaenidae)

The burnet moth subfamily Chalcosiinae is one of the most intriguing groups of Lepidoptera It is comprised of approximately 70 genera and 400 species distributed mainly in Eastern and Southeastern Asia, with only one genus and two species known to be restricted to the Western Palaearctic region. The mainly day-flying adults are well-known by their bright color, contrasting patterns together with fascinating mimicry relationships with other groups of Lepidoptera.

Der Karibische Würfelfalter

Die Würfelfalter, Riodinidae, sind eine der sechs Schmetterlingsfamilien. Die meisten ihrer 1300 Arten sind in der Neotropis beheimatet, eine einzige monotypische Gattung lebt jedoch auf den Westindischen Inseln. Der Karibische Würfelfalter, Dianesia carteri, ist auf Kuba und die Bahamas beschränkt, wo mehrere isolierte Populationen bekannt sind. Ein erster Ansatz unter Verwendung von DNA Barcodes deutet darauf hin, dass Dianesia möglicherweise mehr als eine Art umfasst.

The impact of mutualistic and parasitic life histories on butterfly diversification in an increasingly arid world

Understanding the mechanisms leading to diversification of species across time in a changing world remains a challenge. Africa was largely covered by forests until the middle Oligocene, when geological and climatic changes led to increasing aridification of the landmass. The current, iconic savanna and grassland ecosystems did not become well-established until around 8 million years ago. The effect of this increasing aridification on diversification has not been well-studied in animals, and especially not in insects.

Comparative and experimental wing pattern genomics in Lepidoptera

Understanding coloration and its variation among species, especially in Lepidoptera, has fascinated scientists since the beginning of natural history. In this project we want to compare two genera that have different ecological strategies for protecting themselves from predators using their wing patterns. Hyles moths aim at camouflage while Zygaena show aposematic coloration warning predators of their toxicity.

BALIN: Insektenschutz an Bahnhöfen

Das BALIN Projekt ist inhaltlich im Handlungsfeld Lichtverschmutzung des Aktionsprogramms Insektenschutz der Bundesregierung angesiedelt. Personenbahnhöfe und Haltestellen der Bahn sind in Deutschland regelmäßig beleuchtet, um die Sicherheit, die Orientierung auf dem Bahngelände, die Einhaltung der Barrierefreiheit sowie die Prävention von Vandalismus zu gewährleisten. Die Beleuchtung unterliegt dabei strengen Anforderungen, die an allen Bahnhöfen in Deutschland eingehalten werden müssen.

Pronophilina evolution

The goal of this project is to infer a phylogeographical hypothesis of a selected group of Lepidoptera, the subtribe Pronophilina, based on comprehensive phylogenetic and distributional data, and by doing so, to propose spatial and temporal patterns for the evolution of Andean faunas. The hypothesis is that the study group evolved in South America, and that its radiation is congruent with the uplift of the Andes and changing paleoclimates, hence with the availability of suitable habitats in South and continental Central America.

Sammelexpedition nach Ghana

Mit dem Ziel, Original-Pflanzen-Material für die naturgetreue Nachbildung des Lebensraums Regenwald-Kronendach in unserer Ausstellung zu sammeln, unternahm ein Team von Ausstellungsplanern, Wissenschaftlern und Präparatoren des Museum Koenig im August 2018 eine Sammelexpedition in das Ankasa River Rainforest Reserve im Südwesten von Ghana, Westafrika.

Non-destructive morphological studies of old museum samples using modern techniques

The aim of this project is to use modern non-destructive techniques in order to asses important museum material. Traditionally, the preparation of the genitalia or other parts of the inner anatomy would require the preparation and thus the partial destruction of the sample which is often not possible with important type material. We avoid this by using approaches like µ-computed tomography to visualize the inner parts of these specimens in a non-invasive way.

Apollo population genomics

Parnassius apollo (Papilionidae) is an iconic butterfly species with a wide distribution from Spain to China. The distribution is, however, very spotwise, and e.g. in Germany only a few populations remain. It is the only non-tropical butterfly protected under the CITES The goal of this project is to use whole genome sequencing to investigate the genetic diversity of Parnassius apollo across space and time. To do this we will use both fresh and museum specimens collected across the range of the species, and during the last 120 years.

In this project we investigate how we efficiently can use old, dried, museum materil for phylogenomic studies. A hybrid enrichment kit for Lepidoptera is being designed and first test are promising, indicating that hundreds of genes can be successfully seqeunced for over 130 year old material.

In einer langfristigen Studie, die auch mehrmonatige Studienaufenhalte an europäischen Museen einschließt, werden alle sibirischen Eulenfalter-Arten erfasst, untersucht, beschrieben und abgebildet. Die Ergebnisse werden in Buchform publiziert.

Butterfly-ant association

The lycaenid species Jalmenus evagoras (Theclinae) is a model organism in studies of the mutualism between butterflies and ants. In the field this species is obligately associated with ants in the genus Iridomyrmex (Dolichoderinae). The larvae produce secretions rich in amino acids and sugars, which is sought after by the ants that again protect the larvae against predators and parasites. It has, however, been shown experimentally that ant attendance comes with a cost for the butterflies.

2013

Phylogenomics, systematics and biogeography of the Euptychiina (Satyrinae, Nymphalidae)

This project is a collaboration together with Dr. Keith Willmott and Dr. Akito Kawahara at the Florida Museum of Natural History. Several studies have shown that the current classification of this group delimitated by Walter Forster in 1964 is problematic and at least half of the around 40 genera are non-monophyletic. To stabilize the higher-level classification we want to generate about 400 loci for 100 species to use as a backbone phylogeny for the group and then add five loci for as many as possible of the remaining ~400 species.

German Barcode of Life ( GBOL ) ist ein vom BMBF gefördertes Projekt zur Inventarisierung und genetischen Charakterisierung der Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze Deutschlands anhand von DNA-Barcodes.

African ant blues

This project studies the life history evolution of African butterflies in the genus Lepidochrysops. Unlike 99% of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), the species in this genus are phyto-predaceous: caterpillars initially feed on flowers, but eventually lose interest in the plant and are carried by ants into the brood chamber of the nest. Here they either eat the brood directly, or are fed mouth-to-mouth like cuckoos for the remainder of their development. I'm currently inferring the phylogeny of the group and looking into life history evolution and biogeographical patterns

Die Lepidopteren-Sammlung umfasst zur Zeit mehr als 3 Millionen Exemplare und ist damit eine der größten Forschungssammlungen dieser Insektenordnung in Deutschland. Besonders erwähnenswert ist der große Anteil chinesischer Schmetterlinge (ca. 600.000 Exemplare).

Annähernd 2 Millionen Exemplare aller Familien (geographischer Schwerpunkt: Paläarktis und Südostasien). Die Sammlung enthält über 2000 Primärtypen (Holo-, Lecto-, Neotypen), viele weitere Arten sind durch Syntypen vertreten.
