Abstract:
A new species of rainbowfish, Melanotaenia jakora, is described on the basis of 16 specimens, 34–63 mm SL from a rainforest creek near Meyado village in the Sebjar River system in the southern part of Vogelkop Peninsula of Papua Barat Province, Indonesia. The new species differs from all other Melanotaenia of the Vogelkop clade in the distinct combination of IV (III–V) + I,10 (I,9–12) dorsal fin rays, I,20 (I,18–22) anal fin rays, 14 (11–17) total gill rakers on the first arch, males with elongated dorsal and anal fins reaching base of caudal fin, and coloration of adult males lacking dark scale margins, showing a reflective blue shine of the body, and a solid midlateral stripe without disruptions.
