Research interests

I am interested in species diversity, with emphasis on fishes. As curator for ichthyology (the branch of zoology dealing with fishes), I am responsible for the ZFMK fish collection, and for conducting research devoted to fishes. My current duties include leading the zte  (Centre of Taxonomy and Evolutionary Research), the specimen classical collection and organismal research branch of ZFMK.

In terms of research, I have a broad interest in evolutionary ecology, from modes of coexistence to speciation to hybridization. Activities in the ZFMK fish group group range from field-based work in SE Asia and Europe to DNA barcoding campaigns to the discovery of species new to science in fish collections. A spatial emphasis is on Sulawesi, an island that harbors a fascinating diversity of inland fish species in very different habitats, from deep ancient lakes to streams to the mouth of rivers. With partners and students from Indonesia and Germany, we work on the discovery of fish species diversity, and on the understanding of processes that shape this diversity.

As an ichthyologist, I am member of the European Ichthyological Society, and president of the German Ichthyological Society.
