is a research museum of the Leibniz Association

Digital imaging lab

The ZFMK digital imaging lab has several digital microscopes.

What is digital microscopy?

Photomicrography or digital microcopy is the process of photographing through a high resolution microscope. Special setups are equipped with a high resolution digital camera that is mounted on a traditional microscope or binocular. Additionally there are also purely digital machines where the image is directly shown on a screen. Due to the high resolution, the images have a very small focus range. Thus various images with different areas of focus are taken and subsequently stitched to a single sharp image with specialized software.

Which equipment is available at ZFMK?

The ZFMK has different photomicrographic setups including a Microptics camera system, a Keyence VHX 2000 or a Leica Imager Z2m.

What is photomicrography used for at ZFMK?

This technique is used in various areas of morphological research. It is an essential component of taxonomic descriptions and morphological documentations of organisms or their specific body parts. Additionally it takes an important role in the digitalization and documentation of museum material.
