During my doctoral thesis I investigate the genetic basis of 'pelvic brooding' in ricefishes of Sulawesi. This special type of maternal brood care is very rare in fish and has only been investigated to a limited extent up to now. This special form of breeding occurs in several species that are not the closest relatives of each other. Understanding the genetic and genomic basis of such adaptive traits leads to a better comprehension of evolution and species diversity itself.
