The main objective of the BMBF-funded project “Scalable solutions for biodiversity monitoring in Europe (SolBioM)” is the diversification of an international research consortium, consisting mainly of partners from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, in order to apply for funding for a multinational R&D project within the framework of Horizon 2020 or another EU programme. The scientific-technical focus of the planned EU project is the development of a concept for a European biodiversity monitoring programme using existing research approaches. For example, the Automated Multisensor Station for Monitoring of Species Diversity (AMMOD), which is currently developed by German research institutions, could be also used and extended by other European partners. A related challenge is the international consolidation of biodiversity data as well as the development and maintenance of common reference databases. Software and hardware solutions are to be disseminated and further developed in areas such as computer-assisted bioacoustics as well as DNA barcode-based and optoacoustic insect surveys. Informed decisions on habitat management and the sustainable use of natural resources should be supported by these technical solutions.
