Using the ornithological collection of Otto Kleinschmidt (1870-1954) we analyse the use of its bird specimens for the presentation of the theories of biogeography and species definition as developed by Kleinschmidt. Apart from study skins, other original objects such as feather-boxes, selected morphological specimens, plaster casts etc. will be in the focus of this project. Moreover, the so-called “Geogramme” that Kleinschmidt developed illustrate important results of his life-long work through abstraction and visualisation of biogeographical data. These historical observations and analyses will be discussed within the context of current research.
