Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on dragonflies (Odonata) of New Guinea serve to reconstruct their ancestral distribution areas in a geologically extremely dynamic region. This work contributes to elucidating the biogeographic history and the geographical and geological development of the Tertiary Melanesian island arc systems. The description of new species of damselflies (Zygoptera) and the analysis of biodiversity data provides an important basis for conservation in this region.
