European Journal of Taxonomy

ZFMK and EJT

Scientists of the ZFMK are actively describing new species, reconstructing species distributions, analysing species relationships and are concerned with the analysis of species decline. These research topics are of upmost relevance to our society as they help us to further our understanding of the world, to explore its ressources and to deliver insights on how to protect it. Taxonomy, as this science is called, has shaken off the dust of the past and is re-emerging as a vivid field of inquiry. Therefore, it is clear that taxonomists need a new modern forum for publishing results.

The European Journal of Taxonomy (EJT) is serving these needs in perfect form. Founded by a consortium of European Natural History Institutions in 2011, it has quickly developed into an indispensible journal for the scientific community.

The ZFMK became a member of the consortium in 2018 and since then active supports the production of EJT and its aim to publish descriptive taxonomy to high scientific and technical standards.

Focus

The European Journal of Taxonomy is an international electronic peer-reviewed journal covering the eukaryotic world in four sections: zoology, entomology, botany and palaeontology. EJT welcomes scientific contributions from all over the world, both in content and authorship.

Publication policies

The journal is accessible in free Open Access: neither authors nor readers have to pay fees. All articles published in EJT are compliant with the different nomenclatural codes and persistent digital preservation is provided via LOCKSS. In line with EJT’s FAIR & Open Science policy, publications are encoded in order to distribute their content throughout a network of online biodiversity databases, including GBIF and the Biodiversity Literature Repository.

Indexation

The European Journal of Taxonomy is indexed in:
Science Citation Index Expanded, Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition, Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology, and Environmental Sciences, DOAJ, Google Scholar, Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Biologie (Vifabio). Taxa published in the European Journal of Taxonomy are recorded in: Zoological Record, ZooBank, International Plant Names Index (IPNI).

Electronic ISSN: 2118-9773; Format: A4

EJT consortium

Since 2018 the ZFMK is part of the EJT consortium and actively supports the work of EJT in its aim to publish descriptive taxonomy to high scientific and technical standards.

The EJT consortium consists of multiple european research institutes. The following journals have been merged into EJT: Journal of Afrotropical Zoology, Bulletin de l’Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique (Entomologie – Biologie – Sciences de la Terre) and Steenstrupia.

Natural history institutions are welcomed to apply for membership of the EJT consortium if they share the following principles:

  • descriptive taxonomic research is essential to safeguard our planet’s biodiversity, and remains one of the core missions of natural history institutions and their staff;
  • dissemination of original research, as well as the ability to use and reuse data as freely as possible is the key to innovation and further advancement of science;
  • publishing is part of the research process, and natural history institutions should be able to preserve their inhouse publishing expertise;
  • scholarly publications should be made accessible to all, at no charge
