Noble butterfly
We are delighted that Gabriele Pataky and Hartmut Schmidt have taken over the sponsorship of the noble butterfly Salamis parhassus.
This member of the Nymphalidae family can be found in rainforest and savannah areas from Guinea in West Africa to the Congo in Central Africa. "Forest Mother-of-Pearl" is the name given to the butterfly species with the fine wing pattern, which can be translated as "forest mother-of-pearl".
Adult individuals reach a wingspan of up to 7 cm. In rainforest areas, both males and females like to spend time in clearings, where they can often be seen flying around each other in slow circles. They are often startled by walkers when they are resting under leaves near the ground.
