Hardly any other area in Central Europe has such a great diversity of species as Lake Neusiedl and its surroundings. Nestled between the easternmost foothills of the Alps and the western foothills of the Hungarian Plain, it is on the one hand a stepping stone for European-African bird migration and on the other hand it unites a variety of diverse habitats in a very small area. The lake with its huge reed belt, the lake dam with its vegetation-free sandy areas, the salt pans to the east of the lake, the remains of the puszta and the fen area of the Váh (Hungarian: Hansàg) offer ideal conditions for insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and, last but not least, birds.
From their numerous visits to the area around Lake Neusiedl, biologists and enthusiastic nature photographers Sandra and Wolfgang Walkowiak have brought back extensive photographic material of the landscape, flora and fauna. They present a selection of the biodiversity of this natural paradise in the photo exhibition.
