Werner Franke
We are delighted that Werner Franke has taken over the sponsorship of the Charaxes fulvescens butterfly.
The noble butterfly (family Nymphalidae) with its fiery red-brown wing colouring can reach a wingspan of up to 8.5 cm. The species is relatively common in the rainforests from Senegal to Uganda and Gabon.
The butterflies are usually found in the lower levels of the rainforest, in the tree and shrub layer, where they are often well camouflaged on the underside of thick branches. The long "tails" on the hind wings are atypical for the genus Charaxes, which is why this and similar species used to be classified in the genus Hadrodontes.
