The red-footed sun squirrel(Heliosciurus rufobrachium) occurs in many subspecies from Senegal and Gambia across West and Central Africa, South Sudan and as far west as Kenya in East Africa. It is a medium-sized squirrel. The males reach a maximum body length of 249 mm, the females a length of 241 mm. This makes them only slightly larger than the European squirrel.
The habitat of the red-footed sun squirrel ranges from humid evergreen tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps to secondary forests, cocoa and oil palm plantations and gardens in the rainforest zone to gallery forests and forest remnants in the drier Guinea savannah.
The diet of the red-footed sun squirrel is predominantly vegetarian.
Red-footed sun squirrels are categorised as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, as they still occur in large numbers in protected areas and in habitats that have been modified by humans.
