Blue butterfly
We are delighted that Hannah and Lennart Hieronymus have taken on the sponsorship of the Charaxes smaragdalis butterfly.
This species differs from similar blue species of the Charaxes genus, which belongs to theNymphalidae family of butterflies, by the blue marginal spots surrounded by black rings on the hind wings.
The adult individuals of this butterfly, which is native to the rainforests from Guinea in West Africa to Tanzania in East Africa, reach a wingspan of around 8 cm. Like most Charaxes species, they are extremely strong and fast fliers. They are attracted by faeces, carrion and rotting fruit.
