As the largest raised bog in Europe, the High Fens impress with their extensive moorland landscapes. Metre-thick layers of rain-soaked peat, on which rare species of moss, peat heather, moor grass and cotton grass thrive, give the landscape a different appearance every season. A fragile, valuable ecosystem for rare plant and animal species. Countless rainy and snowy days characterise the image of the fens, when low-hanging clouds and thick fog create a mystical, unreal atmosphere. The countless streams and ponds in the fens shine deep black, the silhouettes of individual bog birches, the gnarled trees of Noir Flohay or the dense spruce forests here and there appear ghostly in the mist. The nature of the High Fens reveals its mysterious beauty on such days.

The Eifel, on the other hand, impresses with its contrasting landscapes: deep blue maars and crater lakes, the "eyes" of the Eifel, are a reminder of the region's volcanic past. Tranquil lake shores and reed beds form valuable habitats for numerous bird species, insects, reptiles and the reintroduced beaver. Gentle hilly landscapes, in which enchanted valleys glow daffodil yellow in spring, alternate with the Eifel limestone hollows, where pasqueflowers, autumn crocus and countless wild orchid species bloom. Open heathland and juniper areas provide a view of extensive beech forests with a rich fauna. Each season has its own colours and moods.
