The Bonn Science Night brings current research to the heart of the city - where it can be experienced in an understandable, approachable and direct way.

Under the motto "Diagnosis: Future", the event on 21 and 22 May invites you to rediscover science: with experiments, hands-on stations, lectures and discussions with researchers. Museum Koenig Bonn will also be represented with four interactive stations and will show how biodiversity can be researched, communicated and understood in a new way with the help of artificial intelligence.

The focus is on questions that could hardly be more topical: How well do we know the species right on our doorstep? What role does technology play in protecting biodiversity? And how can nature be communicated in such a way that it can be experienced by everyone?

Thursday, 21 May

In the school programme, the "Experience nature with all your senses!" station in the House of Education (1st floor) invites you to go on virtual expeditions, test your knowledge of species and experience nature with all your senses. Educational projects such as "Discover Nature Online (NEO)" and FörTax will be presented.

The "ARNI and biodiversity at night" station shows how nocturnal insects are recorded using automatic recorders and artificial intelligence. Visitors can analyse image data themselves and understand how research with AI works.

The "Understanding nature with artificial intelligence" station will take place in the student programme in the tent and will provide insights into the analysis of large amounts of data from biodiversity research and the automated identification of animal species.

Friday, 22 May

As part of the school programme, the "(re)discover local wildlife" station invites visitors to examine previously little-noticed species directly under the binoculars and gain new perspectives on biodiversity on their own doorstep.

The "Understanding nature with artificial intelligence" station will be offered again on Friday - this time outside of the school programme - and will show how AI is used in collections and field research.

From 17:00 to 17:45, Dr Christoph Mayer will speak in P26 (Poststraße 26, Seminar Room 1) about "AI and the diversity of life" and explain how neural networks are changing scientific work.

Dr Katja Waskow will be presenting from 20:30 to 21:15 in P26 (Poststraße 26, Seminar Room 1) under the title "Glowworms, Collared Parakeets and Co.". highlights from the FörTax project, which is dedicated to teaching people about species.

In the Haus der Bildung (hall, 1st floor), Director General Prof Dr Bernhard Misof and Alexandra Hostert, Head of Communications will be discussing the topic "Let's talk: What will the natural history museum of the future look like?" on the role of museums in times of climate and biodiversity crisis. Everyone is cordially invited to contribute their questions and perspectives!
