Toucan Barbet
We are delighted that Rudolf Specht and Doris Koppisch have taken on the sponsorship of the toucan bearded bird (Semnornis ramphastinus).
As the name suggests, the toucan bearded bird is related to both bearded birds and toucans. This bird species grows to around 20 cm in length. Males and females do not differ significantly.
With its thick beak, the toucan bearded bird feeds on fruit. It is an astonishing exception among fruit-eaters, as numerous helpers assist the dominant pair in incubating and feeding the young.
Males and females can often be heard calling as a duet.
The toucan bearded bird is found in south-west Colombia and north-west Ecuador.
