Common swordtail
We are delighted that Petra Esseln, in memory of Herta Kosbab, has taken over the sponsorship of the
common swordtail (Graphium policenes).
It is easy to recognise where the German name of this species from the swallowtail family (Papilionidae) comes from: Both the male and the somewhat larger female individuals are equipped with very long, "sword-shaped" tail appendages on the hind wings. The largest specimens reach a wingspan of around 9 cm. Our male "godchild" has a wingspan of 7.5 cm.
This butterfly species is widespread south of the Sahara and can be found in a wide variety of habitats - from open savannahs to rainforest areas.
