Noble butterfly

We are delighted that Ingrid Hirsch-Leggewie has taken over the sponsorship of the butterfly Hypolimnas dexithea.

Hypolimnas dexithea is a butterfly from the Nymphalidae family. In English, this beautiful butterfly is called the "Madagascar Diadem".

The basic colour is black, with white, on the hind wings also brown markings. The wing edge is heavily serrated and emphasised by blue line markings. This large butterfly has a wingspan of approx. 9-10 cm.

The occurrence of Hypolimnas dexithea is endemic to Madagascar, i.e. this species only occurs there. Its habitat is the forest edges of the island, except in the southern part of Madagascar.

Nothing more is known about this species.

Hypolimnas dexithea is endangered due to the deforestation of the rainforests.
