Noble butterfly
We are delighted that Dr Peter Jäger has taken over the sponsorship of the noble butterfly Cymothoe sangaris.
This representative of the Nymphalidae family is aptly called the "Blood Red Glider". Its wingspan is 4.5 cm. The underside of the wing is brown, possibly camouflage as a dead leaf. Males are quite frequently observed and often collected, females are rarely found. Both males and females usually fly quite high, but the males regularly come down and perch on roads and paths. These beautiful moths are found in the rainforest from Sierra Leone to Nigeria.
