Around 48,000 animal, 9,500 plant and 14,400 fungal species live with us in Germany. Each individual species fulfils important - and often irreplaceable - tasks in the ecosystems. The exhibitions show concisely, strikingly and interactively which factors endanger biodiversity - and ways to stop the loss of species. With its concise approach and diverse hands-on modules, it encourages young people in particular to reflect and act in the interests of nature.

At six stations, visitors can learn about the diversity and role of animal and plant species in the cycle of nature and marvel at their direct effect on our lives. After all, who knows that a single tree can filter water worth 2,700 euros and store around 283 kilograms of carbon per year? Who has any idea that around 48,000 animal species live in Germany alone? In other modules, visitors learn what changes would be necessary in agriculture, forests and cities in order to preserve biodiversity, for example through different types of structures in fields and unsealed surfaces in cities.

It has been known for around 40 years that the number of animal and plant species on earth is declining drastically. Worldwide, around 44,000 species on the Red List are threatened with extinction. Many more could disappear irretrievably before their populations are even scientifically recorded. According to the current "Red List", around a third of all animals, plants and fungi in Germany are also endangered.

The travelling exhibition is a project of the Research Initiative for the Conservation of Biodiversity (FEdA), which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and was developed at the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt. The Museum Koenig Bonn is a research museum and is part of the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change.
