Millions of freshly hatched coral reef fish larvae leave their natal reefs for weeks before they return to a reef for settlement, which is surprisingly often their natal reef. While exposed to the mercy of currents they can use orientation skills such as sun and magnetic compass orientation, olfactory and acoustic cues to find back to a reef. They also preferred the olfactory cues of their own. Apparently, they imprinted on cues of their natal reef to be able to differentiate between own and foreign reefs. To understand this process, we studied the neuronal basis of olfactory imprinting.
